The TORBED processor can be configured as a specialized fluidized bed gasifier (FBG), is a robust thermal conversion system that transforms solid fuels—such as coal, biomass, or municipal waste—into a combustible synthesis gas (syngas):essentially an oxygen-starved (and often lower temperature) partial combustion process that produces a syngas but does not achieve full carbon burnout, also producing a high quality char. Syngas is typically made up of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen, water vapours and other hydrocarbons and condensable compounds. It is considered to be extremely versatile as it can not only be used in its own form, but it can also be used to separate out and purify other elements such as hydrogen and methanol. Gasification process temperature and char quality depend on the fuel being processed. Char made from Straw using a TORBED gasifier has been independently tested to have a surface area of over 450m2 per gram. Gasification is especially useful for managing biomass with high organic ash content where a TORBED processor’s control and low bed mass assist in managing ash that might melt if overheated.
By suspending fine particles in a high‑velocity gas stream, the reactor creates a “fluidized” medium that ensures excellent heat and mass transfer, making the process highly efficient and adaptable to a wide range of feedstocks. Low bed mass gives effective real time control, with little or no thermal inertia.Used as a gasifier, in addition to the benefits set out above, brings its customary virtues of reduced scale, reduced capital cost and high availability.
In the power generation sector, Syngas offers powerhouse flexibility, capable of being used with gas-Engines, gas turbines, a boiler and steam turbine or an organic Rankine cycle turbine. Syngas is also capable of onward processing and can be used as the foundation for the production of other chemicals and fuels thanks to the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis process.
Torbed fluidized bed gasifiers offer a versatile, efficient pathway for converting solid fuels into syngas, supporting both energy production and circular‑economy initiatives while meeting stringent environmental standards.
