Scale separates the TORBED® reactor from the conventional industrial fluidized-bed gasifier more clearly than any other dimension, but the picture is more nuanced than a simple “big versus small” framing.
Conventional fluidized-bed gasifiers — bubbling and circulating — are engineered to scale up by building larger single vessels. Established licensors have engineering pathways into the tens to hundreds of MWth. In practice, however, their commercial footprint is mostly mid-scale biomass and waste applications, with several large projects having struggled with tar formation, agglomeration, and alkali fouling. True commodity syngas at very large scale is overwhelmingly produced by steam methane reforming and entrained-flow coal gasification — not by fluidized beds — so the “very large scale” argument for conventional FB gasifiers is more theoretical than commercial.
TORBED scales through a combination of sizing up and numbering up. Individual reactors are built at the largest size that the underlying physics will support — bounded by jet velocity and momentum, blade geometry, particle circulation stability, microwave field uniformity in the TORWAVE configuration, refractory behaviour, and feed-handling considerations. Once the practical single-unit envelope for a given duty is reached, capacity is extended through parallel modular units. The balance is set by the licensor on an application-specific basis.
This dual scaling approach gives TORBED genuine commercial advantages: phaseable CAPEX, faster permitting and construction, lower scale-up engineering risk, suitability for retrofits, distributed siting near feedstock or demand, and operational flexibility. Each new unit inherits the proven performance of the existing platform.
In practice, the two technologies rarely compete head-to-head. Conventional fluidized-bed gasifiers occupy the centralized mid-to-large biomass and waste niche, while TORBED wins the distributed, modular, electrified, retrofittable scale where most industrial decarbonization is actually happening.
