TORBED vs Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustion Technology: Intense Mixing, Even Processing, Compact Design

Thorough, even processing starts with effective mixing. The TORBED technologies’ intense gas–solid mixing keeps particles moving rapidly through a compact reactor, promoting uniform thermal treatment, avoiding local hot spots and supporting consistent product quality.

Intensive mixing is at the heart of TORBED’s performance. Our process videos show that movement in action, bringing the technology’s operating principle to life. It also has a low bed mass which results in low thermal inertia which means that a TORBED processor responds quickly to changes in heat or feed input, supporting rapid adjustment as feed characteristics or processing requirements change. These two factors combine to give the operator of a TORBED processor very tight control: essential when for example combusting rice husk to make amorphous silica or burning carbon and cyanide out of spent aluminium pot liner; both processes in which minor temperature variations can have adverse consequences. Circulating fluidized bed combustion technology does not offer this level of control.

Additionally, a TORBED processor’s compact arrangement offers a smaller footprint than a circulating fluidized bed system with an external solids-circulation loop. This can reduce space requirements, supporting steelwork, foundations and installation complexity and thereby cost.

In addition to combustion this also applies across drying, roasting and calcination applications: intensive mixing, even treatment and rapid response offer a compelling combination.
